Providing students the skills and experience for entry-level Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining positions and responding to the growing demand for skilled manufacturing workers in DuPage County, College of DuPage’s new CNC Job Readiness Certificate program offers a short-term training with long-term potential.
The one-semester, 16-week program aims to quickly provide regional manufacturing companies with candidates who possess fundamental skills necessary for the industry. The program was developed in collaboration with the College of DuPage Manufacturing Advisory Board, which identified the immediate need for employees with minimum skills in safety, print reading, basic precision tool use, and machine tool operation within the manufacturing sector.
"According to the Illinois Manufacturer's Association, DuPage County is the second-largest in the state for manufacturing jobs, contributing $9.1 billion to the local economy," said Janice Kaushal, COD Dean of Business and Applied Technology. "With a 5.2 percent increase in manufacturing jobs reported by the Department of Labor in November 2022, we know there is a continuous demand for skilled workers in this sector. Our CNC Job Readiness Certificate is a direct response to that."
Students successfully completing the program are ready for entry-level CNC machining positions and can easily build on the certificate to pursue the Automated Manufacturing Systems A.A.S. degree, a two-year program that prepares for careers in modern manufacturing, including computer-aided manufacturing, robotics, and numerical controlled processes.
"The CNC Job Readiness Certificate is the first step towards a fulfilling career in modern manufacturing," said Jim Tumavich, Manufacturing Technology Professor and Program Chair. "We recognize that manufacturing is increasingly becoming highly technical, and our programs are designed to meet the evolving needs of the industry."
For those looking to further advance their skills and career opportunities, pursuing the MANUF. AAS Auto degree offers additional coursework in design, machine operation, and quality processes used in modern-day manufacturing.
