Writing, Reading, Speech Assistance Self-Guided Modules

These self-guided interactive modules (formerly in-class "Mini Modules") were created by WRSA coaches in collaboration with Learning Technologies and focus on aspects of writing, reading, and public speaking. Modules were designed to take 10-20 minutes to complete.

  • Integrating Sources begins with a broad explanation and definition of plagiarism, so learners understand why documenting and citing sources is essential to producing successful college level work. The module provides a review of summarizing, quoting, and paraphrasing and the reasons why one method might be chosen over another to best utilize an outside source or to better support a claim. Learners will consider how to effectively incorporate directly quoted source material into their writing, use signal phrases to integrate cited text, and appropriately cite source material with in-text citations.
  • Managing Public Speaking Anxiety is a skill that can be improved, not an innate talent. Learners will identify their discomfort levels in public presentations and understand the negative thoughts that can produce apprehension in these situations. Reframing negative thoughts as positive thoughts and specific strategies can help presenters alleviate their public speaking anxieties.
  • Textbook Strategies introduces learners to a variety of techniques for utilizing their textbooks more efficiently, including previewing the textbook and becoming familiar with organizational text elements. Learners will practice appropriately managing time by assessing the difficulty of a sample textbook chapter. The SQ4R method (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Record, Review) of studying to improve comprehension and increase recall is also introduced/reviewed. These strategies can assist in preparing for exams, tackling tough subjects, and staying on top of coursework.
