Field Studies/Study Abroad Scholarships and Financial Aid

COD Study Abroad Scholarships

To apply to COD study abroad scholarships, you must complete the General Scholarship application first. You must apply to a study abroad program in addition to applying for a scholarship. Complete the two applications concurrently.

COD Study Abroad Scholarship

Applicants must have completed 9 hours of COD credits and be enrolled in 6 or more COD credits at the time of application. Up to $1,500 may be awarded. Application deadlines are Oct. 20 for spring, Feb. 20 for summer and May 1 for fall. General Scholarship application

COD Dr. Jaco Scholarship for Spanish Heritage Language Learners (Spain or Costa Rica)

Exclusively for the COD summer language immersion programs to Costa Rica or Spain. Preference is given to applicants who are enrolled in or have completed a COD heritage speaker course, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater. Up to $1,000 will be awarded. Application deadline is Feb. 20. General Scholarship application

COD Bordeaux Study Abroad Scholarship (France)

Exclusively for the COD summer language immersion program to Bordeaux, France. Up to $1,000 will be awarded. Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or greater. Application deadline is Feb. 20. General Scholarship application

COD Mirta Pagnucci Study Abroad Scholarship (Italy)

Exclusively for the COD summer language immersion program to Sienna, Italy. Up to $500 will be awarded. Application deadline is Feb. 20. General Scholarship application

COD Dick Wood Memorial Scholarship (United Kingdom and Ireland)

In memory of Dick Wood's leadership as the founder of the International Education program at COD. Exclusively for study abroad in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Applicants must be a resident of District 502 and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater. Application deadlines are Oct. 20 for spring, Feb. 20 for summer and May 1 for fall. One $600 scholarship is awarded each academic year. General Scholarship application

External Study Abroad Scholarships

ICISP (Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs)

$500 for summer and $1,000 for semester programs. Students participating in an ICISP program are eligible to apply. Application deadline is Oct. 15 for spring programs, Feb. 15 for summer programs and May 15 for fall programs. Apply to ICISP Scholarships.

Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship

Applicants must be Pell Grant eligible. Recipients are awarded up to $5,000 depending on the length of the program. There is a $3,000 supplement for students studying "critical languages." Application deadlines are in Oct. and March. Additional Benjamin Gilman International Scholarship information

Boren Award for International Study (NSEP)

Funds American undergraduate students as they acquire language skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the security of our nation. (Study in the United States, Western Europe, Canada, Australia and New Zealand is excluded.) Scholarships vary from $2,500 to $20,000 depending on the length of the program. An 8-week summer STEMS scholarship and US-based Flagship language study programs for African, Indonesian, South Asian and Turkish languages are available. Application deadline is early Feb. Fund for Education Abroad

Scholarships are up to $10,000 for study abroad. Minimum program length is 4 weeks. Non-traditional study abroad students are encouraged to apply. Application deadlines are in Sept and Jan. Additional Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships information.

Critical Language Scholarship

Critical Language Scholarship aims to increase the number of Americans studying and mastering 14 critical languages through fully-funded summer language institutes. Participants are expected to continue language study beyond the CLS experience and apply the language skills to future academic and professional goals. Application deadline is early Nov. US-UK Summer Language Institutes (United Kingdom)

The US-UK Fulbright Commission offers fully-funded summer institutes for US undergraduates in their first or second year of study. These 3-6 week academic programs in the UK explore the culture, heritage and history of the UK while developing leadership, research and communication skills. Application deadline is Feb. BUTEX (British Transatlantic Exchange Association)

To be eligible to apply you must have been offered a place as a study abroad in England at an institutional member of the British Transatlantic Exchange Association. Application deadline is July. Additional BUTEX information.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX, Germany)

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX, Germany) is a year-long scholarship program that involves language study, academic courses and an internship in Germany. Applicants must be 18 to 24 years old at the start of the program and have a high school diploma or its equivalent. German language proficiency is not required, but strongly recommended. Bridging Scholarships (Japan)

Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Japanese language study is not a prerequisite. Bridging Scholarship recipients receive a stipend of $2,500 (for semester-long programs) or $4,000 (for academic year programs). Summer programs are not eligible. Application deadline is April. Freeman/Asia Scholarship

Undergraduate students majoring in any field of study are eligible to study in any of 15 Asian countries. Stipends of $3,000 for summer, $5,000 for a semester and $7,000 for a year-long study are available. Application deadline is March. Additional Freeman/Asia Scholarship information.
