Major: Criminal and Justice Studies
After graduating from high school, Joshua Schweitzer enrolled at Illinois State University but struggled academically, prompting him to take time off and join the Army.
A family emergency cut his military service short, leaving him uncertain about his future. While working part-time in a hospital kitchen, he realized something needed to change.
“Washing dishes illuminated a profound dissatisfaction with myself and the direction of my life,” he said.
Wanting to stay close to home, Schweitzer started at College of DuPage because family and friends spoke highly of its programs. What he found was so much more.
“COD provided excellent teachers, engaging courses and meaningful support,” he said. Faculty encouragement and opportunities, such as having his work recognized for publication and competitions, reinforced his confidence.

In 2014, Schweitzer was named an outstanding graduate finalist and graduated with highest honors. He then enrolled in the College’s 3+1 program in Criminal and Justice Studies with Lewis University and earned his bachelor’s degree. As an integral part of his studies, he gained hands-on experience through four internships with distinguished organizations—the Cook County Sheriff’s Department, United States Liability Insurance, the United States Postal Inspection Service and United Airlines.
After landing his first job with The Hartford insurance company, Schweitzer then worked for TJ Maxx in loss prevention. He is now with the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) as the special assistant to the CEO, having been promoted twice within the first year. Schweitzer started at NICB as a security compliance specialist, in which he provided audit oversight and ensured the physical security of the headquarters location. He then was promoted to the Office of Intelligence and Analytics as a data specialist, where he supported analyst and fraud prevention activities. Shortly after this, he was promoted again to research analyst on the medical fraud team.
“I am grateful to be part of an organization that aligns so closely with my education and passions. NICB’s position at the crossroads of government, insurance and the private sector offers a unique and impactful platform,” he said.
His experiences at NICB include opportunities to attend global events in locations such as Edinburgh and Singapore.
“These experiences have been transformative, and they all trace back to the foundation I built at COD,” he said. “College of DuPage delivers more than academic excellence. It creates a space where students are truly seen and supported. Unlike large lecture halls, COD emphasizes individual growth, making it an ideal choice for those seeking clarity, direction and a fulfilling educational experience. The foundation provided by this school has been instrumental in shaping my professional journey.”
Schweitzer wholeheartedly recommends COD to prospective students while also expressing profound gratitude to his parents, family and wife.
“Their unwavering love and support were essential to my success.”
