Credit Hour/Contact Hour Guidelines for FPD Courses

Faculty Development courses and mini-courses should be designed so as to provide Alternative Credit for any interested full-time faculty members.

In addition to providing explicit learning outcomes in the material you present to learners, clearly state how many hours of involvement your course provides.

One semester hour of credit may be granted for every 40 hours of involvement. This formula is based on the Carnegie Unit and Student Hour.

The Carnegie definition equates a unit of credit to three hours of student work per week (1 lecture hour, plus 2 hours of homework).

In order to offer, for example, a 3-credit course over 8-weeks, the class should provide approximately 4.5 contact hours a week (face-to-face, online, or hybrid). For more information see Instruction and Credit Equivalencies.
