Almost Home Kids

Almost Home Kids provides transitional care in a home-like setting to children with medical complexities who are ready to be discharged from the hospital, but preparations at home still need to be made before the child can transition home. Children receive 24/7 medical care. We are a small facility of 12 beds and rely on volunteers daily.

Days and Hours Available for Service Learners

Volunteer shifts are available 7 days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Volunteers will choose a 2-hour shift based on the availability of the web-based Volgistics calendar.

Description of Service Learner Role

Volunteers engage the children (ages from infants to 21 years) according to their stage of development with interactive activities such as; reading books, playing with sensory toys, rocking babies, and providing companionship for children who are medically fragile. Many of our children rely on quite a bit of medical technology for their daily lives (tracheotomy tube, ventilators, heart monitors, feeding tubes) and often are not mobile or verbal, so that is something you would need to be comfortable with.
