College of DuPage has launched a new Cyber Threat Intelligence A.A.S. degree that prepares students to gather and analyze information about cyber threats, respond to digital attacks and use artificial intelligence (AI) as part of cyber defense strategies.
“This degree aligns closely with the National Security Agency’s (NSA) emphasis on preparing students with competencies in both cybersecurity and AI,” said Tony Chen, professor of Computer and Information Technology. “As organizations adopt AI-driven systems and tools, there is a growing need for professionals who understand not only how to develop and use these technologies, but also how to secure them against emerging threats.”
With the rise of AI, cybercriminals are increasingly using the technology to carry out cyberattacks. AI enables cybercriminals to create more sophisticated malware and accelerate attacks targeting digital systems, networks and data. To counter this trend, cybersecurity professionals are implementing AI in their defense strategies to help automate threat detection, accelerate incident response and analyze large volumes of data more efficiently.
Developed by COD’s Computer and Information Technology (CIT) and Computer and Information Science (CIS) programs, the Cyber Threat Intelligence A.A.S. degree combines coursework in cybersecurity, threat intelligence and AI. Students will study cyber defense, network security fundamentals and the new Cyber Threat Intelligence course. Several certificates within the CIT and CIS programs are stackable toward the degree.
“COD is designated by the NSA as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, and we will continue to serve as a leader in cybersecurity education,” said Chen. “In addition, by pursuing the NSA’s CyberAI designation, COD plans to play an even more significant role in advancing cybersecurity and AI-focused education.”
The Cyber Threat Intelligence A.A.S. degree prepares graduates for careers in areas such as information security and computer systems analysis, where they can apply threat intelligence to help organizations identify vulnerabilities, assess emerging cyber threats and strengthen their digital defenses.
“AI is increasingly integrated into everyday life, and cybersecurity has become an essential part of protecting our digital world. Our goal is to educate future professionals on how to securely implement AI technologies and develop the skills needed to defend systems against evolving cyber threats,” said Chen.
