Student Stories: Monserrat Garcia

Monserrat Garcia

Major: Medical Assistant

From a young age, Monserrat Garcia enjoyed helping people.

“I would go to many doctor’s appointments with my parents,” she said. “I loved seeing the nurses and medical assistants do their jobs and always wanted to work at a doctor’s office.”

After learning more about becoming a medical assistant, Garcia knew it was the right career for her. She discovered the Medical Assistant program at College of DuPage, which had great reviews and was located close to her home. This allowed her to stay near her family.

“College of DuPage has great resources and helped me every step of the way. Their finance department helped me sign up for FAFSA and the counselors set up a course schedule that worked with my time,” she said. “The medical assistant practicum introduced me to Northwestern Medicine and amazing people.”

Garcia earned both her certificate and Associate in Applied Science degree and was hired by Northwestern in the RMG Family Medicine department. Having gained experience in her field, she plans to continue her health care education and study sonography at COD.

“I love what I do and helping people,” she said. “College of DuPage is a great school with great professors and a great environment that helped me achieve my goals.”
