The Cleve Carney Museum of Art (CCMA) is hosting “Linework: Chicago Comics and Community,” an exhibition revisiting the Linework publication and the artistic community that formed around it.

The exhibit will be on display from Sept. 24 through Nov. 21 at the CCMA art gallery inside the McAninch Arts Center (MAC) on the College of DuPage main campus, 425 Fawell Blvd. An opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24. Admission to the exhibit and reception is free and open to the community.

Columbia College Chicago describes Linework as a comics and graphics anthology that embraces “the do-it-yourself, the raw and the strange.” The anthology has featured work by the college's students, alumni, faculty and staff, as well as artists from the greater Chicago community. Linework was created under the guidance of acclaimed cartoonist, designer and educator Ivan Brunetti, who serves as faculty advisor.

“During the early decades of the 21st century, Linework became a gathering point for many of the most compelling voices in Chicago’s comics scene,” said CCMA Director and Curator Justin Witte. “Bringing together emerging and established artists, the publication fostered a period of creative exchange that reflected the diversity, experimentation and collaborative spirit of the city’s alternative comics community.”

“Linework: Chicago Comics and Community” highlights the collaborative spirit of the Linework project and the paths its contributors have taken since. Among them is Chicago-based cartoonist Nick Drnaso, whose graphic novel “Sabrina” became the first graphic novel longlisted for the Booker Prize.
