In response to the dynamic shifts in media and technology, College of DuPage has introduced a new Media Literacy, Journalism and Production Certificate offering students a pathway to acquire hands-on skills in broadcast journalism and media production.

Recently approved by the Illinois Community College Board, the 21-credit hour certificate program offers a curriculum that prepares students for various roles within the media landscape, including broadcast journalism, news production and more.

Through the program, students will learn to navigate the media environment, discerning fake news from reality, and acquire hands-on skills in areas such as podcasting, news gathering, advertising, news story gathering, and both on-camera and behind-the-scenes production.

Students can concurrently earn credit toward COD’s Digital Broadcast Journalism Associate of Arts degree which requires 64 credits in program requirements, program electives and general education courses.

COD Dean of Arts, Communication and Hospitality Brian Carlson emphasized the importance of media literacy in an era marked by rapid technological evolution and the increasing prevalence of digital communication platforms.

“This certificate is a crucial step for those preparing to navigate and shape the future of media,” he said. “In a world inundated with mass communication through smartphones, television, radio and podcasts, media literacy is not just an asset but a necessity across various fields.”
