The College of DuPage Police Department recently earned accreditation from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program. COD is one of only three community colleges in the state with this designation.

“We’re demonstrating to not only the immediate COD Community, but the larger DuPage County area our commitment to best practices in public safety,” said College of DuPage Police Chief Joseph Mullin. “ILEAP accreditation is a testament to the department’s adherence to the highest level of standards and professionalism in the law enforcement field.”

COD President Dr. Brian Caputo, celebrated the department’s accreditation, which is good for four years.

“This comprehensive review examined multiple aspects of the department,” he said. “The College Community is proud of the department’s commitment to excellence and I thank everyone involved for their hard work toward this achievement.”

As part of the process, an ILEAP lead assessor examined all aspects of the department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and services. The overall assessment process included a review of written material, individual interviews and the inspection of various department processes for compliance.

"The one-site assessors looked at our reports, procedures and records to make sure we’re compliant with statutes. They also interviewed key members of the police department and other college areas,” said Deputy Chief Jim Nehls. “The ILEAP is a commitment by the entire department. Each member displayed a complete dedication to the best practice in our profession.”

The College of DuPage Police Department is a professional 24-hour law enforcement agency. The COD police serve to create a safe environment for learning, partnering with the community to support administrative policies and the law. The department seeks to gain voluntary compliance with policy and law by working with the community to promote a shared vision of what an appropriate learning environment should be, and the benefits of maintaining such an environment. We value feedback, especially when supported by fact.
