Students in College of DuPage’s Motion Picture and Television program comprised the only community college team to win a 2017-2018 Crystal Pillar award for Best Public Service Announcement/Commercial, presented by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences' Chicago/Midwest Chapter.
Tricia Altamore (Naperville), Nereo Carvajal (Berwyn), Kyle Dearborn (Oswego), Andrew Yee (Naperville) and Arturo Zurita (Addison) were honored for their work in producing a PSA for COD Cares, a campus-wide program for students and staff to participate together in service activities that benefit communities within the College’s district. Other winning institutions include DePaul University, Loyola University and Northwestern University.
The project was created as part of the Commercial Video Production summer course, an advanced class in which students are hand-selected by MPTV faculty members based on their production skills. The COD Cares PSA also received a first-place award for Best TV Spot at the 2018 Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Student Awards earlier this year. Watch the award-winning video.
The course, which was recently offered for its ninth term, was co-taught by MPTV professor Jennifer Piehl and instructor Ann Llewellyn. The instructors were impressed with how well the team worked together and said the accomplishment is great for the students’ careers and the program.
“They got a chance to network with professionals from all over the Midwest and it will be a great addition to their resumes,” Llewellyn said. Piehl added that “it’s also good recognition for the College and speaks to how we challenge our students to produce quality work.”
