Art in Chicago Explore the exciting art world of Chicago! Study artwork in person, get some exercise, and earn up to three credits in less than a month! Gain an introduction to navigating our vast local art resources, experience contemporary art, research art from other cultures, and create a public art blog. Itinerary includes visits to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, and a Chicago Architecture River Cruise. Be prepared to walk several hours each day. Access to a cell phone with internet service and camera is highly recommended for this course. Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the destination including purchasing their own Metra ticket or driving/parking and CTA transport in Chicago as needed. Environmental Predicament Explore contemporary environmental issues from perspectives that include ecological, economic, social and ethical viewpoints. Study the structure and function of ecosystems, examine lifestyle issues, explore ethical frameworks and analyze the relationships between population, agriculture, pollution, biodiversity and land resource use. Wildlife Studies: Michigan's Upper Peninsula Travel to Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula along the coast of Lake Superior to gain first-hand experience in wildlife sampling techniques, with an emphasis on mammals. Participate in a mark-recapture population study of small mammals and engage in survey methods for animals such as deer, bears, and wolves. The outdoor experience will be complemented through hiking excursions and camping along the beautiful shore of Lake Superior. Classroom/lecture activities will be used to enhance identification of vertebrate animals and their signs, explore issues related to wildlife conservation and management, and further students' understanding of unique features of the area that contribute to its diverse wildlife. BIOLO  1205-FS020: Ecoregion Field Study

Tanzania: Wildlife Safari and the Great Migration Witness wildlife interactions in iconic landscapes dotted with giraffes, warthogs, wildebeest, lions, antelopes, and bird species. Game drives into the caldera of Ngorongoro Crater, home to the greatest concentration of large mammals on Earth, will provide viewings of the "Big Five" game animals within grasses and ancient baobab trees and possibly rare black rhinos. Stay in comfortable, strategically located mobile tented camps along the Great Migration route where wildebeest and zebra cross the open plains of the Serengeti, and Tarangire National Park. Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru may be seen while in Arusha National Park. Olduvai Gorge, where important fossil remains were discovered, will give us clues to the origins of mankind. Participants must be able to walk over uneven terrain for one mile, enter/exit and ride in safari jeeps. Passport and visa are required. Portugal: Hiking Lisbon to Algarve Home to explorers Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco da Gama, Portugal is a country with a rich history, and often credited for setting into motion the Age of Discovery. Join us as we discover this "Gateway to Europe" for an active exploration of food, culture, history, and hiking. Beginning in the capitol of Lisbon, we'll head to the Serra de Sintra, to trek among 10th-century castles and colorful palaces. Continuing south, we'll hike sections of the Rota Vicentina/Fisherman's Trail before we reach the craggy, coastal cliffs of the Algarve. Here we will hike along beaches and caves of the remarkable Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos. Class: Oct. 5 (7 to 8:50 p.m.). Field Study: Nov. 4 to 11. Hiking: Fall in the Canadian Rockies by Rail and Road Join us as we explore the incredible Canadian Rockies during peak fall color! Starting in Calgary, we'll take to the road and travel to Banff and Jasper National Park along the renowned Icefields Parkway. Explore Lake Louise, travel atop a glacier and marvel at the massive, jagged peaks, waterfalls and turquoise lakes along the way. From Jasper we will take to the rails for an overnight train journey through the mountains to Canada's bustling west coast seaport of Vancouver where we will hike the urban oasis, Stanley Park. Alaska Arctic Adventure Experience the wildest and most remote part of Alaska as we venture north of the Arctic Circle to explore roadless, pristine landscapes virtually untouched except by the hand of nature. Beginning in Bettles, a town founded during the gold rush and home to only 23 hearty souls, we will take to the skies in bush planes to explore the two least visited and most remote parks in our National Park System: the massive and rugged Gates of the Arctic and the wildlife-rich Kobuk Valley. Landings in both parks will allow for short excursions. Returning to the lodge, evenings will be spent looking overhead for the aurora borealis, just as dark skies return to the land of the midnight sun. The second part of the adventure will be hiking among the changing tundra of Denali National Park and the Alaska Range as fall brings warm colors and fresh snow to the high peaks. Shenandoah National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway: Fall Color Hiking Autumn in Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway is glorious! Immerse yourself in fall colors winding along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains on the Skyline Drive and hike some of the 500 miles of trails in Shenandoah National Park. Experience one of America's most scenic drives, the Blue Ridge Parkway. Starting at mile marker 0, we will explore hiking trails to waterfalls, stunning vistas, overlooks of rugged mountains and the Appalachian Highlands all the way to Asheville, NC. Expect to hike four to nine miles per day with hilly terrain and elevation gain of 500 to 1,200 feet. Class: Sept. 13 (6:30 to 8:50 p.m.). Field Study: Oct. 8 to 14. Sea Kayaking Baja Mexico Kayak, hike and snorkel the uninhabited shores, and wildlife-rich waters of the Sea of Cortez as we island hop via motorized boats from La Paz to Loreto, Mexico. Explore the diverse islands along the way and share the waters with whale sharks, sea lions, mantas, whales, and dolphins by the hundreds. Upon arrival at each island camp, we'll launch our kayaks, don our masks and snorkels or hike to a pinnacle for a look at each extraordinary new view. Additional activities may include exploring the fossilized shell beach of Monserrat, snorkeling with the playful sea lions of Los Islotes, kayaking through arches and into the hidden coves of Isla San Jose, and trying your hand at fishing before breakfast each morning. Rock Climbing: Devil's Lake Enjoy a weekend rock climbing adventure in the Midwest's premier climbing location, the glaciated quartzite cliffs of Devil's Lake State Park in central Wisconsin.
