In July 1966, the Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Rodney Berg as College of DuPage’s first president. Following a national search, Berg, who had previously served as president of Everett Community College in the state of Washington, was unanimously appointed by the Board.
On Sept. 25, 1967, College of DuPage opened its doors for the first time. Classes were held in office trailers and at leased suburban sites throughout the district. Driving from class to class, the initial 2,621 students and 87 full-time faculty and staff were affectionately nicknamed road-runners, leading to the adoption of the “Chaparral” as the College’s official mascot.
During the time of the presidential search in 1966, the Board also was working on acquiring a suitable site for a permanent campus and hired a site location consultant firm, Faustus Company of Chicago. The firm recommended that the Board negotiate for the 200-plus acres owned by Martin Braun between Park Boulevard and Lambert Road, as well as another section of land west of Lambert Road in Glen Ellyn.
The 273-acre Glen Ellyn site was purchased in 1968. The interim campus, located west of Lambert Road, opened in September of 1969 with Buildings J, K and L.

A student votes on a mascot and school colors, and in the fall of 1968, the Chaparral was selected as the College’s mascot. The new name reflects the fact that classes initially are held in office trailers and leased suburban sites throughout the district.
