Workshops

Would you like to participate in one of our workshops? Read the information below to ensure you have all the information you need and understand the expectations before completing the registration form.

  • Pre-registration will begin on Monday, April 1. Workshop registration will be available at the event on a first-come, first-serve basis as long as space is available.

Participant Information

If you are planning to register for a workshop, please take note of the following important information.

  • Age and Grade Limit: All workshops are designed for 5th-8th graders unless otherwise specified. Please make sure you sign up for a workshop that is age-appropriate. Participants under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
  • Workshop Registration Limit: Attendees will only be allowed to participate in ONE morning workshop and ONE afternoon workshop. Additional registrations will be invalid. A full list of workshops, including times and descriptions, can be found below.
  • Ticketing: Upon completion of this registration form, you will receive an email from Eventbrite with your workshop information. Please follow the directions in your email regarding how to claim your ticket at the event.
  • Check-In and Check-Out Process: Each workshop lasts 60 minutes unless otherwise specified. Participants must check-in 15 minutes prior to the start of the workshop to secure their spot. Once you are checked in, you should remain in the holding area until your group is called. If the participant is under 10, a parent/guardian must accompany them to the workshop. Otherwise, parent/guardians are welcome to remain in the holding area. Upon return, participants will be reunited with their parent/guardian and may proceed to the check-out table to exit the holding area.
  • Transportation to/from Workshop locations: For everyone's safety, workshop participants will be escorted to and from the arena and the workshop location with an adult chaperone. Workshops that take place in our TEC building require parent/guardian transportation. This will be indicated during workshop sign-up and provided in your confirmation.  

NOTE: Workshop participants who fail to check-in 5 minutes prior to the start time of the workshop risk forfeiting their spot. Once the workshop begins, no additional participants will be admitted.

2024 Workshops

STEMCON workshops are 60 minutes unless otherwise noted, and run in two sessions. Morning workshops run from 10:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., and afternoon workshops run from 1:30 to 3:45 p.m. Descriptions of each workshop, along with the times they are being offered, are provided below. Review these descriptions and identify which workshop(s) you are interested in registering for before signing up. Remember, participants can sign up for a maximum of one workshop per session. Additional registrations will be voided.

A 360 Voyage Through the Body and Beyond

Presented by: COD Nursing, Immersive Visualization Lab 
Times offered: 11:15 a.m.; 2:15 p.m.
Age: Grades 5-8

Are you curious about the wonders of the human body? Do you dream of exploring faraway lands? In this immersive workshop, we'll blast off on a 360° video adventure. Prepare to be amazed by the inner workings of your body, learn cool facts about germs and our defenses, and experience the magic of virtual travel.

SAFETY NOTE: Fully immersive experiences may be physically overwhelming for some viewers. Use discretion with workshop attendance.

Cybersecurity Principles and 3D Modeling

Presented by: COD Computer and Information Technology
Times offered: 10:15 a.m.; 1:45 p.m.
Age: Grades 5-8

Explore the intersection of cybersecurity principles and 3D Modeling. This workshop provides practical programming in a familiar CodeBlocks format through the Tinkercad online software program. Share your creative vision while applying cybersecurity principles and create physical artifacts that will be printed on a Cricut Maker 3. This workshop lasts between 60-120 minutes depending on the skill and speed of the participant.    

Does God Play Dice?

Presented by: COD Mathematics

Age: Grades K-4

Join us for an interactive workshop where parents and children will participate in hands-on activities to tackle uncertainty using the fascinating concept of probability. Take home souvenir keepsakes as a delightful reminder of the experience. 

Electronic Circuit Building with Robotics Demo

Presented by: COD Electronics Technology/Robotics
Times offered: 11 a.m.; 1:30 p.m.; 2:30 p.m.
Age: Grades 5-8

Under the guidance of COD Electronics Technology department staff, participants will create a wearable LED circuit to take home. Working individually, students will add components to a circuit board, crafting a manually controlled device. Additionally, they'll gain hands-on experience with industrial robots, operating four-foot tall robotic arms used across various industries for product handling on production lines. 

LOCATION NOTE: A parent/guardian is required to transport the participant to our TEC building for this workshop. 

Exploring Atoms with Virtual Reality

Presented by: COD Chemistry, Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality Room
Times offered: 11:15 a.m.; 2:15 p.m.
Age: Grades 5-8

In this mind-blowing workshop, grab a VR headset and witness the quantum world firsthand as you craft real elements, one particle at a time. Visualize the mind-bending shapes of electron orbitals, manipulate the parts of an atom, and explore the invisible world in an entirely new way. This workshop is limited to 12 participants per session. Attendees under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.

Foundational STEM Experiences

Presented by: COD Early Childhood Education and Care
Times offered: 10:15 a.m.; 11:15 a.m.; 1:45 p.m.
Age: 3 to 5 year olds

Blocks, water, ramps, rollers, and inclined planes: Preschool-age children creatively design, build, and investigate moving pathways with the Early Childhood Education and Care academic program's student teachers. This workshop is limited to 10 participants per session, and participants must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.  

SAFETY NOTE: Strollers are not allowed due to space constraints. No children under 3 permitted in the workshop due to choking hazards - NO EXCEPTIONS.  

Frankenstein Tomatoes

Presented by: COD Horticulture
Times offered: 10:30 a.m.; 11:30 a.m.
Age: Grades K-8

Explore the Horticulture Greenhouse with a hands-on experience. Learn the art of tomato grafting, pot up a houseplant to bring home, and enjoy a guided tour of the greenhouse..

From Design to Product in Manufacturing

Presented by: COD Manufacturing
Times offered: 11 a.m.; 2 p.m.
Age: Grades 5-8

COD Manufacturing Department staff shows how quickly and efficiently you can design and produce a product using 3D computer-aided design software (SolidWorks) and a manufacturing machine. In this workshop, participants work on plans for already-designed products (i.e. pencil holder, cell phone holder) and then watch as those products are produced in just a few minutes using lasers and other tools in the shop. No computer expertise is needed.

Identifying Rocks Instead of Minerals

Introduction to Video Game Development

Presented by: COD Computer and Information Science

Delve into the exciting world of video game development by creating your very own virtual slide puzzle!  Learn fundamental game design and development concepts while following along with the demonstration. No prior coding experience is necessary, as this workshop is designed to be beginner-friendly. By the end of the session, you'll have your first fully functional video game to share and enjoy!

Let’s go Lean with LEGOs

Presented by: Society of Women Engineers

Age: Grades 3-12

Members of the Society of Women Engineers guide middle and high school students through a hands-on activity to learn about “Lean” manufacturing, one of the strategies used to improve processes and reduce waste in the production system. Participants assemble LEGO cars for both a traditional assembly line simulation and a Lean assembly line simulation. They then discuss what they observed as well as share ideas about how the assembly process could be improved.

Can you code an Amazon Hercules robot to deliver your friend’s birthday present on time? Join this free, two-hour virtual challenge to learn programming basics and discover how Amazon uses computer science to help fulfill customer orders. SHPE - Dia de Ciencias

Ready to unleash your inner innovator? This interactive workshop will plunge you headfirst into the world of engineering. Snap Circuits®  - Electronics Exploration
