ELS/ESL - ACCUPLACER

There are three English Language Studies (ELS) tests - Reading Skills, Language Use and Listening.

Note: For students applying to a Health Science program, the Reading Placement test may be required regardless of the above exemptions. See program packet for details. Students applying to Engineering Pathways are required to take the math placements test. Students will also need to take a Reading and Writing placement test unless they have a qualifying ACT or SAT score.

ELS Reading Placement

Students are required to take the ESL Reading Skills test unless they have one of the following:

  • College-level credit totaling 12 semester hours with at least a “C” average.
  • College certificate, Associate degree, BA/BS degree, Graduate degree.
  • ACT composite score of 20 or higher. Proof of score must be provided.
  • SAT verbal/critical reading score of 500. Proof of score must be provided.
  • TOEFL score of 550 paper/pencil, 213 computer-based or 79 Internet-based. Proof of score must be provided.
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. Proof of score must be provided.
  • ACCUPLACER ESL Reading Skills test transferred from another institution with minimum cut–off score. Official score report required.

ELS Writing Placement

For placement into English 1101 or 1105, students are required to take the ESL Language Use test unless they have one of the following:

  • ACT composite score of 20 or higher. Proof must be provided.
  • TOEFL score of 550 paper/pencil, 213 computer-based or 79 Internet-based. Proof of score must be provided.
  • IELTS score of 6.5 or higher. Proof of score must be provided.
  • ACCUPLACER ESL Language Use tests transferred from another institution with minimum cut–off score. Official score report required.

+Successful completion of ELS 0553 along with a Reading Category One score will allow you to register for English 1101. It is also highly recommended that you take ELS 0663 to better prepare you for English 1101, but taking only ELS 0663 will not allow you to register for English 1101.

ELS Listening Placement

This test is recommended for students to measure their ability to listen and understand spoken English.
