Student Stories: Elizabeth Jessen Holtquist

Major: Paralegal Studies

Elizabeth Jessen Holtquist wants to be an inspiration to others.

Having been a stay-at-home mom for 13 years, Holtquist had only worked a few hours here and there as a water fitness instructor. She initially attended College of DuPage while in high school, taking a bench step aerobics class.

Holtquist then continued her education at COD and became a certified EMT-B, PBT and EKG technician. Unfortunately, her credentials had lapsed and she had no idea what to do next.

“I had heard wonderful things about the College of DuPage Paralegal Studies program. I did some research and talked with Sally Fairbank, who was the program coordinator at that time,” she said. “I had just enough on my credit cards to register for school and I completed Drafting Legal Documents, Intro to Paralegal Studies and English. I immediately soaked in every bit of information from my instructors. During that first semester, I was going through a divorce, and encouraging words and determination are what kept me going.”

Workforce Development Services

After Holtquist was accepted into the Paralegal Studies program, she applied and was approved for a grant from workNet DuPage to continue her education. This allowed her to immerse herself in her studies and take advantage of various activities.

“I was told this career is about networking, so I joined the Paralegal Club and became an officer, contributed to the paralegal blog, became a member of the DuPage County Bar Association (DCBA) and became a certified court monitor for MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving),” she said. “Since I had used legal aid, I wanted to give back. I received an email from the DCBA, and they were looking for volunteers to participate in their annual fundraiser for legal aid, a performance called ‘Judges’ Nite.’ I signed up to be part of the singing cast and wow, what an experience!

“I have two amazing children, and I want to set an example for them. I want everyone to know that no matter what is happening in your life, keep going, keep moving forward. Educate yourself!”

I truly learned so much in a small amount of time, and I cannot say enough good things about the program.

Holtquist did graduate, earning an Associate in Applied Science, and was inducted into Lambda Epsilon Chi, the national paralegal honor society. She then transferred to Elmhurst University and earned a bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies with a minor in Environmental Studies. She made the Dean’s List and was inducted into Pi Gamma Mu, the international honor society for social sciences.

Now a paralegal in DuPage County, she urges anyone to consider COD and the Paralegal Studies program.

“The paralegal students and instructors are like family to me,” she said. “The instructors want you to succeed. Former program chair Sally Fairbanks and professors Linda Jenkins, Sandra Polanco, Liz McGuan and Judge Douglas have made such a positive impact in my life. They inspired me to pursue my dreams. I truly learned so much in a small amount of time, and I cannot say enough good things about the program.

“I am now one step closer to my dreams, and nothing is slowing down this single mom of two. I am not done learning yet!”
