Faculty Stories: Jim Bradley

Jim Bradley

Program: Mathematics

Math humbles Jim Bradley on a daily basis.

“Math is unique among the sciences, featuring unparalleled exactness, permanence, beauty and scope of application,” he said. “If you can do math, you can do anything—but you will never learn it all.”

With a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a master’s degree from Purdue University, Bradley spent nearly 20 years in exploratory research and development at Bell Laboratories. He enjoyed working with the people and on initiatives that affect people’s lives.

My six-word mission statement is, ‘Learning to teach, teaching to learn.’ I am still growing and motivated in this second career.

But he was drawn to a different career and turned to teaching, coming to College of DuPage in 2005.

“Robert Heinlein said, ‘When one teaches, two learn,’” he said. “My six-word mission statement is, ‘Learning to teach, teaching to learn.’ I am still growing and motivated in this second career.”

Bradley has confidence in his students and hopes they take away more than just the principles they learn.

“I hope they develop a passion for learning and a solid tradecraft foundation for—and the confidence to take—the next steps in a meaningful journey,” he said. “I am often inspired by students and invariably inspired by my faculty mates. We can, and do, make a difference.”
