Introducing our New Teleconference Series!
Virtual Reference Services . . .
What, Why and How?

Two Successful Shows...

  • February 8, 2002

  • April 19, 2002

Thanks to all the people involved who made the two shows successful! Many of our viewers have asked for the presentation slides..  We provide the slides here in Adobe Acrobat file format, so you need the free viewer installed on your machine. Also, please note that these files average 1 Megabyte in size, so a dial-up connection will be downloading for over an hour, while a DSL or cable modem (average 400kps) will be finished in a couple minutes. Just added! Black on white, printable versions (be kind to your ink cartridge!)

For reference, we list the original materials below:

Program Synopsis

The rise of the Internet has been matched by a decline in the number of patrons using your library services. Many now come to your libraries to use your computers to access the Web for reference information and some have stopped coming altogether. "How do we get our patrons back?" would have been our traditional response. A more cogent question might be: "How can we move our services to wherever our clients are?"

Where our clients are is increasingly on the net. People download music, visit their friends by e-mail, find travel directions, book their tickets, learn, and even, find life partners, on the web. It may be that the days of face-to-face reference service, as it was when most of you entered the library profession, are numbered. But, by offering virtual reference information, we librarians have an incredible opportunity to create a whole new dimension and meaning to the term "reference service." A number of important projects are aimed at bringing clients back by offering remote reference services that allow their patrons to access them 24 x 7.

The two national satellite teleconferences on virtual reference services on Friday, February 8, 2002 and Friday, April 19, 2002 from noon to 2:00 P. M. (ET) are a must-see for professional librarians, library decision-makers, library board members and government agencies & grant-giving organizations that work in the library world.

The programs will clarify the differences between traditional and virtual reference services and analyze the organization impact that new services can have. They will analyze what works, what pitfalls to avoid, what new skills are required and what must be changed within your library to make virtual reference services work well.

  • Program I (February 8) will give an overview of the current state and variety of virtual reference services and their future directions. The conference will detail changes such services have already made in the library community and explore how creative work can be an effective agent of change. Program I will help you assess need for change and the opportunities it means for your library.

  • Program II (April 19) will show how library practitioners are instituting virtual reference services by showcasing successful implementations. The program's goal is to give practical, realistic information to the working librarian and decision maker on moving to virtual reference services. These will be candid discussions of the problems facing adopters of virtual reference services work.

Current program plans include these presenters:

  • Richard M. Dougherty is the series host and past Director of the University of Michigan Library and the University of California at Berkley Library. Currently, he is on the Board of Trustees of the Ann Arbor Public Library and is President of Dougherty and Associates, a library consulting firm that offers workshops on the creation of new reference service environments. Read his welcome letter.

  • Diane Kresh, Library of Congress

  • Nancy O'Neill, Santa Monica Public Library

  • Jana Ronan, George A. Smathers Library

  • Tracy Strobel, Cleveland Public Library

The producers are very happy to announce that RUSA (Reference and User Services Association - a Division of the American Library Association) has added its endorsement to this teleconference series.
