College Credit Facts
Soaring to Excellence 2002
 
Course: LTA 190 Soaring to Excellence
Code: 17077 (needed to register)
Dates: November 16, 2001, January 18, 2002 & March 22, 2002
Tuition: US$111
Location: Students are responsible for confirming their viewing location. Contact your local library system to determine if they will be subscribing to the series or call 1-800-3-LINKUP (1-800-354-6587) to determine your closest viewing location. If room permits, Soaring students in the College of DuPage area may be able to view the teleconferences live on the set. Space is limited so if you are interested please choose this option when completing your course booklet request form.

Credit: Three quarter hour credits may be earned. For those enrolled in College of DuPage's Library Technology program, these teleconferences can fulfill your "Selected Topic" requirement.
Time: All teleconferences air from 12:00 p.m.  to  2:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
Textbook:
1.  No traditional textbook purchase is required.
2.  Students will receive a free, required course booklet.
3. Students will create their own unique textbooks by completing these assignments.
General Overview of Assignments View
View each of the three teleconferences. Ask your site coordinator to provide a tape of the teleconference if you miss a session or wish to review material.

Read
Four articles are required for each of the three teleconferences. Two articles will be suggested by the presenter, and two articles will be selected and located by the student.

Reflect
Consider these questions:
  1. How might you use what you've learned at your library (or at a library in the future)?
  2. What did you learn that was new, surprising or that you agree or disagree with?

Write
Record the bibliographic information using samples provided. Record your reflections beneath the citation. You will be creating an annotated bibliography.

Create
Create a chapter of each of the teleconferences consisting of:

  1. Title of the teleconference.
  2. Presenter outline.
  3. Student notes.
  4. Annotated bibliography of three readings related to the subject.
  5. Copies of the articles.
  6. Any supplementary materials you wish to include.
Final Project

The final project involves applying one concept or practical idea you learned from Soaring to Excellence to a library you choose. Detailed information is included in the course booklet.
Materials Each registered student receives:
  • an introductory letter,
  • a course booklet including:
    • the name of the course instructor,
    • directions on submitting assignments,
    • a course syllabus,
    • teleconference outlines and bibliographies,
  • three quarter hours of college credit upon successful completion of assignments.
