Student Spotlight: Ying Wang
Ying Wang studied law in China and earned her bachelor's degree.
Unfortunately, the native of northeastern China could not find a job and ended up working in human resources for Belle International Shoes Company. When her cousin, with whom she is very close, moved to the U.S. in 2008, Wang decided to do the same, determined to continue her education and begin a new career.
Wang moved to Oregon in 2010 and spent one semester enrolled in an ESL program. Determined to start a master's degree but realizing she needed to complete several courses before doing so, she began researching schools. With her cousin now living in DuPage County, along with an aunt and several friends, she looked in the area and found that College of DuPage was one of the top schools in the state.
Wang decided to move once again and enrolled at COD as an international student. For 18 months, she completed the necessary courses she needed to transfer into a master's program.
"I've also had the opportunity to see what I really want to do in the future," she said.
In addition to her studies, Wang worked in the International Student Services office, which allowed her to gain even more valuable skills.
"I've had a great experience dealing with the international population and improving my English skills," she said."It's taught me that communication skills are really important, and I'm working with students who do not speak native English. I've also had a chance to learn about American culture."
Wang's goal is to earn a master's degree in accounting and work in international business.
"College of DuPage Accounting professors have been really good," she said. "I know I made the right decision and I'm looking forward to my new career."
