Student Spotlight: Julie Valdez
Major: Mass Communications
When Julie Valdez first came to COD, she was unsure of her ultimate goal. Already working full time, she wanted a career she felt passionate about.
"I began at COD in 2007 as a part-time student. I had a full-time job and no idea how to become a college student," she said. "From the first day I walked into the Naperville Center, I had so many wonderful people assisting me and heading me in the right direction."
Valdez enrolled in classes and began working as a student worker and later as an administrative assistant at the Naperville Center. After completing her general education requirements at COD, she earned a transfer scholarship to North Central College to complete her bachelor's degree in Broadcast Communication, where she also is minoring in Organizational Communication.
She credits College of DuPage with getting her on the path toward success and is closer to her dream of becoming an investigative reporter. In 2013, she was named Best News Director in the country by the Intercollegiate Broadcasters System for her work at North Central College's WONC 89.1 FM.
"Without the knowledge I learned at COD, I would not be as successful at North Central College," she said. "It was important for me as a student to take advantage of as many opportunities as I could. One was becoming the news director for WONC. The resulting award for my efforts shows me that hard work really does pay off and it's a great honor."
College of DuPage gave Valdez the guidance she needed and the initial push to get her on the road to higher education, she said.
"I truly appreciate what COD has done for me," Valdez said. "I am grateful to every professor who gave me the knowledge I needed to become successful in and out of the classroom."
