Student Spotlight: Patria Syegco
Major: Associate in Arts
Patria Syegco initially enrolled at Columbia College in Chicago to study graphic design.
But she did not enjoy the experience and transferred to Lewis University, where she tried majoring in nursing and criminal justice without success.
“I decided to attend College of DuPage because the commute from home was not that far and I heard great things about this community college from many people,” she said. “Surprisingly, I excelled in my studies.”
She did so well that in 2016 she earned her Associate in Arts degree and was named an Outstanding Graduate finalist. Syegco has transferred to Aurora University, where she is pursue a bachelor’s degree in Social Work.
“I am very passionate about helping the homeless population,” she said. “My ultimate education and career goals are to obtain my master’s degree in Social Work and one day open a homeless shelter of my own, which can provide many resources to help the homeless get back on their feet and become part of society again.”
Syegco would advise any students considering College of DuPage to enroll.
“COD is a great school with many resources to help you be successful in achieving your educational goals,” she said. “The sacrifices of attending college will reap many rewards in the future, and before you know it you will have graduated.
“COD helped me meet goals by communicating with my awesome counselor Edison Wells, who kept me on track toward achieving my Associates in Arts degree.”
