Student Spotlight: Li Sheng

Li Sheng
Major: Fashion Studies

As a kid, Li Sheng would make clothes for her Barbie doll. Then she would design garments for herself and ask her mom to sew them.

When it came time for a career, Sheng went in another direction and pursued business. But it wasn’t the right fit.

“After I got my MBA, I found that I didn’t like it and I had no idea what I should do,” she said. “The only thing I knew is that I had to do something I have a passion for so I could be happy. And, as we all know, investing in the education of art is risky, thus I had never considered doing that. But I knew I had to make a change or be stuck for a long time.”

Sheng turned to College of DuPage and was impressed by the affordable price, the updated facilities and the Fashion Studies program. In fact, on her first day visiting COD, she randomly met Sharon Scalise, the Fashion Studies program coordinator, who gave her a warm welcome, a tour and information about classes. Sheng was immediately excited about beginning her studies.

“During the program, all the teachers I met were very encouraging. They made me believe in myself and pushed me to do more,” she said.

Sheng also took part in two of the program’s annual fashion shows. For the first show, she was named Most Outstanding Beginning Designer and received a second award for Best Construction. She also earned the Fashion Group International $5,000 scholarship. For the second show, she was the runner-up for best second-year designer.

Off-campus, Sheng took part in The Next Fashion Chicago “Next Generation Fashion Design Challenge” and qualified as a semifinalist.

Now that she has earned her Associate in Applied Science degree in Fashion Design, Sheng is ready to pursue her new career.

“All these chances that happen inside and outside of school will help you to find your own path, but you have to take that step and find it out by yourself,” she said. “Fashion design was my dream, and College of DuPage is where I started to make my dream come true.”
