Student Spotlight: Nick Petrillo

Nick Petrillo
Major: Motion Picture/Television

When Nick Petrillo was a child, he was interested in making movies. But he never thought of it as a viable career until coming to College of DuPage.

“I took Intro to Motion Picture/Television as an elective and decided to follow it as a career because I was unsure of what else I wanted to pursue,” he said. “I ended up taking a Television Production class taught by Jennifer Piehl, and she suggested that I take part in the College’s student-run news program, Courier TV News. Through that, I became a student worker and helped to produce many award-winning broadcasts and stories for the college.

“Through my work with Courier TV, I had opportunities I could never have imagined. I had access to ride in the Cub’s World Series Victory Parade – a chance I traded to a coworker who loved them more than I did. In exchange, I interviewed the Daily Herald’s transportation correspondent about a roadway amendment, which was only the tiniest bit less exciting. I got to meet Joe Shanahan, the owner of Chicago’s legendary Metro concert venue. I represented COD’s student body in a Q&A session during a press conference with Governor Bruce Rauner. I watched a man set a world record for the amount of people he could hug in one minute. I reported on the 2016 elections live from Senator Tammy Duckworth’s watch parties for both the primary and the general election.”

While at COD, Petrillo received the Steve Clifton Memorial Scholarship for two consecutive years from the College of DuPage Foundation.

“The scholarship, which is in honor of a former student in the MPTV department, allowed me to study at the College with much of the financial burden removed from my parents and me,” he said.

Petrillo earned two associate degrees – in Television Production and Digital Broadcast Journalism. His ultimate career goals are to work his way up through the news circuit as a news producer and photojournalist, going from small markets into the larger ones until finding a place where he is comfortable and proud of his work.

He recommends College of DuPage to any students unsure of their goals.

“I came to COD after dropping out of Illinois State University after one semester, in search of a better way to find what I wanted to do in life,” Petrillo said. “COD helped guide me into a career field I am passionate about. It gave me the hands-on knowledge to hone my skills and get real-world experience that I wouldn’t have been able to get at four-year universities.

“There are many courses and career paths available in every field possible. The faculty and staff members are some of the most caring and dedicated people I have ever met, and they did everything they could to help me find my way and succeed.”
