Student Spotlight: Natalia Negrete
Natalia Negrete’s mother has been in the cosmetology industry for 25 years.
“She would bring me to her beauty shop for as long as I can remember. She would always have me in the break room with a mannequin head and the TV on. From then on, a career in cosmetology has been my dream that I needed to fulfill.”
While in high school, Negrete was taking cosmetology classes at Technology Center of DuPage and moved into College of DuPage’s Cosmetology program, where she was most impressed with the instructors.
“The teachers were there for me nonstop and helped me balance both my cosmetology and my regular classes,” she said. “They encouraged me with my journey of 27 credits each semester my last year, and they went above and beyond with helping me when I was struggling with my work. College of DuPage also provided a plethora of opportunities to find jobs and helped with skills in order to work in the field of cosmetology.”
Having earned an associate’s degree and a certificate with high honors, Negrete will pursue a bachelor’s degree in Business Management and a minor in Entrepreneurship at Benedictine University. Her career goal is to own a salon and she would like to expand a company that she and her sister created called My Secret’s Out, which sells hand-packed and handmade products.
She believes College of DuPage is an ideal place to start.
“The Cosmetology program is full of great teachers,” she said. “Make sure you keep focused on your work and always keep your eyes on the prize. Also, take advantage of any opportunities that are presented, such as the SkillsUSA competition and fashion shoots.”
