Student Spotlight: Alexandra McGarel
Although Alexandra McGarel is pursuing a degree in marketing, she also has another passion.
“I’ve loved acting ever since I can remember,” she said. “I participated in theater throughout high school. I love the feeling of performing and exploring different characters.”
While at College of DuPage, McGarel performed with College Theater, having appeared in “Spoon River Anthology,” “And Then There Were None” and “Dreams of Antigone.” She also was a Presidential Scholar, an impressive award that included a full-tuition scholarship and enrollment in COD's Honors program and the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society.
Her love of theater isn't stopping her from studying marketing.
“I had no idea what I wanted to study for a while, and then my dad, who works in product development, decided to take me to work with him,” she said. “I talked with people in the business department, and marketing stuck out as the right fit for me. I liked the creative side of marketing and that my communication skills could benefit me. I like that marketing doesn’t just deal with numbers and spreadsheets. Figuring out what consumers want and how to get that product to them interest me.”
McGarel transferred to North Central College, where she is majoring in both marketing and theater. College of DuPage gave McGarel a chance to explore these options.
“I chose COD because I received a great scholarship, and I liked that it was close to home,” she said.
