Major: Travel

Jazmin Galindo's passion for travel started at a young age.

"I spent summers in Guatemala and moved across the country several times," she said. "When I learned I could travel for a living, I became fixated on the idea."

She was hesitant about whether to attend College of DuPage or North Central College.

"It was a last-minute decision, but getting involved with the COD Student Ambassador program the summer before classes began won me over," she said. "I immediately felt connected to the campus once I got involved."

Galindo also received three scholarships: the Foundation’s Textbook Scholarship, the Foundation’s Need-Based Scholarship and the Study Abroad Scholarship, which allowed her to travel to France in summer 2013. She's a big fan of the Learning Commons, where tutoring helped get her through math classes.

She also is an officer for the Latino Ethnic Awareness Association, which helped to strengthen her leadership skills.

"I consider myself fortunate to be working with a wonderful group of people at the Latino Outreach Center," she said. "The Latino Outreach Center coordinator, Saraliz Jimenez, has been a wonderful mentor. I wouldn’t be doing so well without her encouragement and opportunities she has provided for me."

Galindo will graduate with her Associate in Arts degree in January 2014 and the Fundamentals of Travel/Tourism certificate in the spring. From there, she is ready to start pursuing her passion and working in the travel and tourism industry.

"I just want to dive into the workforce and gain experience. If there are opportunities for bigger positions that require a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree, then I will be more than happy to go back to school," she said. "I’m an ambitious person. I have no doubt that I will succeed.

"I encourage students to get involved around campus. There’s something for everybody. You don’t need a four-year school to make new friends when you have no idea what you want to do in life. All you need is an open-mind and a smile."
