Tessa Dittmann
Major: Cosmetology

Although Tessa Dittmann was always interested in cosmetology, it took her a few years to figure out that she wanted to pursue it as a career.

“I went back and forth with different career plans but was never satisfied to continue with them,” she said. “I believe in having a job that you love so much that it doesn’t feel like one. Once I started the Cosmetology program at College of DuPage, I was excited every day to come to school and soak up any knowledge I could. From then on, I knew this was the right path.”

Dittmann decided to attend COD because both her brother and sister did. She knew it was the smartest way to finish her general education classes, especially because she initially was unsure of a career path. Now she’s discovered an environment that allows her to learn and grow.

“COD let me connect with really great teachers and students whose advice moves me along in not only my career but also in my daily life,” she said. “COD is helping me reach my goals by providing me with the steps to properly sign up for classes and pointing me toward classes that are right for the degree I chose.”

In 2017, Dittmann competed for College of DuPage and won the Illinois SkillsUSA competition in Cosmetology for post-secondary students.

Dittmann has earned an Associate in General Studies degree and is currently pursuing an Associate in Arts and an Associate in Applied Science in Cosmetology, after which she will earn her cosmetology license. Her ultimate goal is to own a studio or salon and to continue taking informational and hands-on classes that will further her knowledge as a stylist.

She recommends College of DuPage as a place to start, even if you aren’t sure of what major to pursue.

“And if you do know what you want to do in life, go to COD and at least get those general education classes out of the way,” she said. “It’s a cheaper and smarter way to go so you don't have all the debt on you back when you finally get out of college.”
