Student Spotlight: Bobby Berry
Bobby Berry grew up watching classic movies.
“I love the old Hollywood looks. I love the vintage hair designs and the glamour of the red carpet,” he said. “One of my favorite movies is ‘The Seven Year Itch’ with Marilyn Monroe. That’s the one with the classic scene where she stands over the subway vent and the air blows her skirt up. She looks amazing, with her blonde hair and all of her curls. She has a timeless look that reads through every generation.”
When Berry was ready for college, he immediately thought of College of DuPage because of its academic excellence. And the Cosmetology program was a perfect fit for him.
“College of DuPage gave me all of the real-world skills I needed,” he said. “It prepared me in every way to be successful behind the chair, and I also learned great life skills.”
Berry currently rents space at Lucid Salon in Elgin and works as both a color consultant and an educator. He works with the Lyric Opera House and has a close friend with a career in Hollywood, so he spends time on the west coast helping her with red carpet events. He also has worked with Jennifer Aniston’s hairdresser.
Berry’s goal is to build a successful beauty brand that is his own. He regularly returns to College of DuPage, interacting with students in the classroom and serving on the Cosmetology program advising board. As for prospective students, he would tell them to choose COD.
“The Cosmetology program is amazing,” he said. “COD is one of the best community colleges in the nation, and every year the program gets better and better. I gained the confidence to accomplish what I have so far, and I know other students can do the same.”
