Faculty Spotlight: Janice Miller
As a child, Janice Miller was encouraged by her family to go into nursing.
“Caring for others comes naturally,” she said. “I love people, young and old.”
Miller worked in intensive care nursery and labor and delivery at Alexian Brothers Medical Center for 20 years. She also worked part-time in hospice and home IV therapy. But it was her love of learning and sharing her experiences that led her to teaching in College of DuPage’s Nursing program.
“Teaching allows me to help students grow into their own career path,” she said. “Health care is constantly changing. If I can be used to guide students to become safe practitioners and develop critical thinking skills, I get excited for them.
“I want my students to really understand the true essence of the nursing profession: care. Care comes in different forms: a touch, a kind word. Care is also about making right decisions, being an advocate for those who cannot defend themselves. To care for others unconditionally is at times sacrificial service. My prayer is that they walk away with the spirit that Florence Nightingale instilled in my heart when I entered nursing when she penned the words ‘Nursing is a calling from God.’”
Miller also was a student at COD, and in 2016 she was named one of the College’s Distinguished Alumni. It is her faith and her students that inspire Miller.
“In my life and as a professional nurse, I have seen and experienced life and death and Christ helps me live out my life, one day at a time. I also am inspired by all my students. Some are undergoing great trials and tribulations when they are in the program. Their willingness to endure the rigor of nurse training inspires me to care and prepare them for the profession.”
