Faculty Spotlight: Casey Emerich
Department: Office Technology
Casey Emerich first became interested in business and office technology education while in high school.
“I remember feeling differently about Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses,” she said. “These courses were practical to me. The curriculum was useful as a student and as a future professional.”
Emerich began thinking about teaching even earlier when, as a young girl, she would accompany her dad – a teacher – to Take Your Child to Work Day at Glenbard North High School.
“Sitting in the back of his classroom, I was inspired by his ability – and the ability of other instructors – to captivate the attention of the audience, make connections and meet objectives. I knew then I wanted to teach,” she said. “My desire to teach was sidetracked when I enrolled as a Communications major at Illinois State University. Like many daughters, I have my mom to thank for getting me back into teaching.”
Before coming to College of DuPage, Emerich taught business and computer courses at West Aurora High School, where she was also co-sponsor of the DECA Business Club. DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management.
“I enjoyed being part of the college and career readiness process. Much of high school is preparing for students for college, but also a time for them to explore their likes and dislikes, strengths and weaknesses,” she said. “Teaching CTE courses and DECA allowed me to do both.
“A fear of mine has always been a student asking, ‘When are we going to use this?’ I want students to leave my class with practical knowledge and skills that will lead them to a successful, fulfilling career. I hope they feel confident and unafraid to ask questions. We all have something to offer and can learn from each other.”
