October 2007 Program
Ending Slavery
with Kevin Bales
Professor Emeritus Roehampton
University
Lecture and discussion
Monday, October 22, 2007
7 to 9 p.m.
Experts estimate that twenty-seven million people currently
live in slavery. This sobering figure includes individuals forced into
what many consider to be forms of modern-day enslavement, including
exploitation of migrant labor and human trafficking. Kevin Bales, president
of Free the Slaves, the U.S. sister organization of Britain’s
Anti-Slavery International, attributes significant increases in the
number of people forced into slavery over the last five decades to
changes in the global economy and political corruption. In his recent
book Ending Slavery: How We Free Today’s Slaves, Bales explores
the dynamics of this global problem and identifies ways that citizens
and institutions can help put an end to this ancient injustice.
Kevin
Bales is professor emeritus at Roehampton University in London and
serves on the board of directors of the International Cocoa Initiative,
an organization working to eliminate forced labor in the chocolate
industry. He co-wrote a documentary based on his work, Slavery:
A Global Investigation, for which he won the Peabody award in 2000 and two Emmy
Awards in 2002. He is also the recipient of multiple human rights awards
and author of several books. His new book, Ending
Slavery: How We Free Today’s Slaves, will be available for purchase and signing at
the program.
