Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's latest film, Pakistan's
Taliban Generation, takes place from Bajaur in the North West Frontier Province to the
city of Karachi, where an entire generation of children is growing
up in a country scarred by violence. The film suggests that conflicts
have moved beyond the Afganistan-Pakistan border and are not just killing
children, but also turning the next generation into killers.
Documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is
the first non-American journalist to receive the prestigious Livingston
Award, and the youngest recipient of the One World Media broadcast
journalist of the year award. In the last seven years she has produced
and reported on 13 films for major networks in the United States
and Britain. She has earned major awards in broadcast journalism,
including the Overseas Press Club Award, the American Women in Radio
and Television award, the Cine Golden Eagle Award, and the South
Asian Journalist Award. Her career in documentary filmmaking began
when she examined the plight of Afghani refugee children in Pakistan,
and she is now well-known for documentaries dealing with life in
the Muslim world. Born in Karachi, she was the first woman in her
family to receive a Western education, earning a Bachelor of Arts
degree from Smith College and two Master of Arts degrees from
Stanford University.
