Compared to other immigrant groups, Asian and Pacific immigrants
feel that they receive very little attention and have little influence
on public policy. These immigrants, at least one-quarter of the nation’s
foreign-born population, include those from East Asia, South Asia, Southeast
Asia, and the Pacific region. Many of these immigrants are well educated,
have a high median household income, and own their own businesses.
Dr. Sunil Chand, himself a South Asian immigrant from India, has been
president of the College of DuPage since 2003. He previously was executive
vice president, academic and student affairs, at Cuyahoga Community
College District in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees
in English at St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, India and his doctorate
of literature degree at Kent State University in Ohio.

This
is the first of several meetings on immigration to the United States.
