The
Permanent Energy Crisis: Oil, Depletion and War
with Michael Klare
Are scarce resources — diamonds, gold, copper, timber, arable
land, and water — the root of most contemporary conflicts? Is
petroleum more likely than other resources to provoke major crises and
wars in the years ahead? Will we clash with China and India and other
rising powers over access to major oil regions? These and other issues
will be discussed in the context of our future energy policies.
Michael Klare is director of the Five College Program in Peace and World
Security Studies at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. Defense analyst
for The Nation, he is also author of Resource Wars: The
New Landscape of Global Conflict; Rogue States and Nuclear Outlaws:
America’s Search for a New Foreign Policy; and Low Intensity Warfare.
He is an authority on the causes and consequences of war and U.S. military
policy. Professor Klare graduated from Columbia University and received
his Ph.D. in political science at the Union Institute. His latest book,
Blood and Oil: The Dangers and Consequences of America’s Growing
Dependency on Imported Petroleum will be available for purchase
and signing at the program.
