| Beginning
in 1998, taxpayers may be eligible for tax credits for expenses they pay
for post-secondary education for themselves and their dependent children.
These tax credits can directly reduce the amount of federal income tax for
returns filed in 2000 or later. The Hope Tax Credit is available on a per-student
basis for the first two years of post-secondary education, while the Lifetime
Learning Tax Credit applies on a tax-return basis and covers a broader time
frame and range of educational courses. If you have additional questions about your eligibility for these education tax credits, you can call the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) at (800) 829-1040 or consult your tax advisor. Although the College of DuPage is unable to provide students and families with any tax opinions or advice, additional information on the Hope Tax Credit and Lifetime Learning Tax Credit may be found at the following web sites: |
