Sexual Harassment

Definition of Sexual Harassment

Sexual harassment is any unwelcome attention of a sexual nature that creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive environment or interferes with educational or work performance. Sexual harassment is a violation of state and federal law, as well as a violation of C.O.D. Policy #4074.

The following are examples of behaviors which might constitute sexual harassment. Please note that sexual harassment is not limited to these examples:

Verbal Behavior
• "Humor" or "jokes" about sex or about gender or sexual orientation related characteristics
• Suggestive comments about a person's clothing, body or sexual activity
• Sexual propositions
• Direct or indirect threats linked to sexual propositions or activity

Nonverbal Behavior
• Leering
• Whistling
• Suggestive or insulting sounds
• Obscene gestures

Physical Behavior
• Brushing the body
• Touching
• Pinching
• Coerced sexual activity
• Sexual assault

What to do if you are a victim of sexual harassment:

1. Try to stop the behavior directly. Tell the offender clearly that the behavior is unwelcome and offensive to you and that you want it to stop immediately.

2. Get help from others if you find it difficult to confront the offender directly. Staff members in the Counseling and Human Resources offices can help you analyze the situation and determine the best way to tell the offender to stop.

3. Write down what happened, including time and place, and the names of possible witnesses.

4. Talk with others who may have been treated in a similar way. Find out if they would be willing to support you in any action you might take to get the behavior stopped.

5. Report the problem. No one will force you to take any action you do not want to take, and you will be protected against retaliation for reporting. If you feel you have been harassed by an employee of the college, contact the Director of Human Resources at (630) 942-2460. If you feel you have been harassed by another student, contact the Vice President for Student Affairs at (630) 942-2485.
