1.What is the nature of the Real Estate program at College of DuPage?
The Real Estate program at College of DuPage is designed to meet the needs of both students wanting to enter the real estate industry and those already employed in the field who wish to continue their professional growth. It includes the courses required by the State of Illinois that qualify students to take the following state license examinations:

Real Estate Broker
Real Estate Salesperson
Associate Real Estate Appraiser
Home Inspector

2. What real estate degrees, certificates and courses are offered at College of DuPage? How is a certificate different from a degree?
A certificate focuses on a specific body of knowledge whereas a degree combines that focus with a broad academic background.

Degree: Associate in Applied Science degree with a Real Estate Option
Students earning this degree generally seek employment following graduation as opposed to transferring to a four-year school.
Includes those courses required by the State of Illinois to qualify to take the state license examinations for an Illinois Real Estate Broker License and an Illinois Real Estate Salesperson License. These courses may be taken independently of the degree program.
This degree program contains the following requirements:

Certificate: Real Estate Appraisal certificate
Students earning this certificate generally seek employment as an appraiser.

Includes courses approved by the State of Illinois as acceptable for credit to qualify to take the state license examination for an Illinois Associate Real Estate Appraiser License.

Course: Home Inspection

Students completing this course generally seek employment as a home inspector.

This course satisfies the State of Illinois education requirement to qualify to take the state license examination for an Illinois Home Inspector License.

3. Will the real estate courses transfer to a four-year school?
Real estate courses may transfer to some baccalaureate-granting schools. Students who plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree should consult with an adviser and the transfer institution to ensure that credits will transfer.

4. What career opportunities are there in the real estate industry?
Career opportunities in the real estate field include salesperson, broker, appraiser, loan officer, title examiner, property manager, home inspector, land development, construction and positions in larger corporations with real estate departments.

5. When is a Real Estate Broker or Real Estate Salesperson license required?
A Real Estate Broker or Real Estate Salesperson license is required whenever a person is representing another person in performing real estate acts such as buying, selling, leasing or managing real estate. A license is not required when a person is performing these acts for himself or herself.

6. What is the difference between a broker and a salesperson?
A broker is a person licensed to represent others in performing real estate acts and can do so independently. A salesperson is also a person licensed to represent others in performing real estate acts but may do so only through a real estate broker under which he or she is sponsored (employed).

7. What are the State of Illinois requirements for obtaining an Illinois Real Estate Salesperson License?
Be at least 21 years of age.
Have a high school diploma or equivalency.
Successfully complete the Real Estate Transactions course (45 classroom hours). REALE 1110 at C.O.D. meets this requirement.
Pass the Illinois Real Estate Salesperson Examination.

8. Does College of DuPage offer the coursework required to obtain an Illinois Real Estate Salesperson License?
Yes. College of DuPage offers the course REALE 1110, Real Estate Transactions.

9. What are the State of Illinois requirements for obtaining an Illinois Real Estate Broker License?
Be at least 21 years of age.
Have a high school diploma or equivalency.
Successfully complete the required coursework (120 classroom hours) as follows:

Real Estate Transactions (45 classroom hours), REALE 1110 at C.O.D.
Advanced Principles 2000 (15 classroom hours), REALE 1120 at C.O.D.
Contracts and Conveyances (15 classroom hours), REALE 1122 at C.O.D.
Brokerage Administration (15 classroom hours), REALE 1124 at C.O.D.
Financing (15 classroom hours), REALE 1126 at C.O.D.
Property Management (15 classroom hours), REALE 1128 at C.O.D.

Pass the Illinois Real Estate Broker Examination.

10. Does College of DuPage offer the coursework required to obtain an Illinois Real Estate Broker License?
Yes. College of DuPage offers the courses listed in Question 9.

11. What type of Real Estate Appraiser licenses are there in Illinois and what are their requirements?
General Requirements:
Be at least 18 years of age.
Have a high school diploma or equivalency.
Successfully complete the required coursework and experience requirement.
Pass the appropriate Illinois Real Estate Appraiser Examination.

There are three ranks of real estate appraisers:

Associate Real Estate Appraiser
Education requirement: 75 classroom hours in appraisal coursework
Experience requirement: none

State Certified Residential Real Estate Appraiser
Education requirement: 200 classroom hours in appraisal coursework
Associate's Degree
Experience requirement: 2,500 hours

State Certified General Real Estate Appraiser
Education requirement: 300 classroom hours in appraisal coursework
Bachelor's Degree
Experience requirement: 3,000 hours

12. What appraiser coursework is available at College of DuPage?
College of DuPage offers the coursework required to qualify to take the state license examination for an Illinois Associate Real Estate Appraiser License. This consists of the coursework outlined under the certificate requirements for a Real Estate Appraisal certificate in Question 2.

13. What is a home inspector?
A home inspector is a person who performs home inspections for others.

14. Does a home inspector need a license?
Yes. The State of Illinois requires that any person who acts as a home inspector must have a license.

15. What are the State of Illinois requirements for obtaining an Illinois Home Inspector License?
Be at least 21 years of age.
Have a high school diploma or equivalency.
Successfully complete the required coursework (60 classroom hours). The C.O.D. course REALE 1170, Home Inspection, meets this requirement.
Pass the Illinois Home Inspector Examination.

16. Does College of DuPage offer the coursework required to obtain an Illinois Home Inspector License?
Yes. College of DuPage offers the course REALE 1170, Home Inspection, mentioned in Questions 2 and 15.

17. What are prerequisites?
Prerequisites are requirements that must be met before a student is permitted to take a particular course. They are intended to insure that the student will have the background or skill to perform in the course. They typically consist of previous coursework, consent of instructor, or other requirements.
