According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment for surgical technologists, who perform similar surgical assistant duties, will grow a predicted 19% for the years 2010-2020. The BLS stated that surgical technologists earned $41,790 as a median yearly salary in 2012. The BLS stated that there is a projected increase in employment over the course of the 2008 to 2018 decade. This rate of employment is expected to be faster than the national average for all occupations. In 2006, there were approximately 86,000 surgical assistant positions. The BLS (www.bls.gov) expects this number to be 107,000 in 2016, an increase that gives surgical assistants an above-average growth rate.
According the National Surgical Assistant Association, the average starting salary for surgical assistants is $55,000, with an overall average of $75,000, and upper range salary between $120,000 and $200,000. According to the Diploma Guide, Surgical Assistants made more than $80,000 in April 2012. The median annual salary for a Surgical First Assistant was $81,928 in March 2012, Salary.com reported. People in the profession made between $73,890-$89,102, according to salary.com.
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook there were 93,600 surgical technologists jobs in 2010 and the job outlook for 2010-2020 is 19% (about as fast as average). When researching Surgical First Assistant on Careers.org there were 1212 Surgical First Assistant jobs. This is due to an aging population that will require an increased number of surgeries, the BLS noted. The BLS said technological advances, such as fiber optics and laser surgery, have also allowed the development of new surgical procedures. The demand for surgical assistants will develop from the broadening of health care services technological developments, and the rising elderly population that will require more medical care. These factors will create a favorable job market for qualified professionals.
Currently, there are no other Surgical Assistant Programs in the State of Illinois.
