Cosmetology, A.A.S.

Students will learn professional level techniques in hair design, chemical processes, esthetics, and nail technology. Prepares student for state certification for the Illinois Cosmetology License from the Department of Professional and Financial Regulations. The Cosmetology degree requires a minimum of 68 credits in program requirements and general education in the courses listed below.

Cosmetology, Certificate

Students will learn professional level techniques in hair design, chemical processes, esthetics, and nail technology. Prepares students for state certification for the Illinois Cosmetology License from the Department of Professional and Financial Regulations. After completing all program requirements, students are eligible to take the licensure examination through the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. Students must be licensed in order to practice cosmetology in Illinois. The Cosmetology certificate requires 50 credits in the courses listed below.

Nail Technology, Certificate

The art and science of beautifying and improving nails and skin of hands and feet. Includes the management of salon operations and licensure requirements. The Nail Technology certificate requires 12 credits in the courses listed below.

The Salon at College of DuPage offers a full range of salon services to members of the community at a fraction of the cost of professional salons. Under the supervision of licensed instructors, students perform beauty services, such as cuts, styling, color, manicures, pedicures, facial waxing and more.

Cosmetology program graduates will:

• Practice safety, sanitation, and infection control procedures
• Develop business skills
• Master technical skills in a professional setting
• Pass a written and hands-on practical exam with a minimum score of 83%
• Prepare to take and pass the State Board Licensing Exam

The Cosmetology program is offered in two formats: 

1. The full-time format is a fast-paced, three semester program. Courses are offered Tuesday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3:50 p.m. During the second semester, students attend Tuesday through Saturday during the same timeframe. Students will complete the program the third semester in a shortened schedule to prepare for the state licensing exam.
2. The part-time program is offered over five semesters. Students generally attend Mondays to Thursdays from 5 to approximately 9:50 p.m. Students will complete the program the fifth semester in a shortened schedule to prepare for the state licensing exam.

First-year students will be required to purchase an all-inclusive supply kit to use in class. The kit includes books and equipment. The fee for this kit is approximately $1650. One book is used for the entire duration of the program. The kit must be purchased at the Bookstore prior to class. This is not part of tuition and fees. Left-handed kits are slightly higher due to left-handed shears. 

If you have leftover financial aid after your tuition and fees have been paid, you can use your remaining funds to cover the cost of the kit. 

Professional and proper-fitting attire in solid black is required. Pants cannot be sheer, torn, have holes or frayed bottoms. All clothing and aprons must be kept clean.
