Training: The Role and Practice of Deliberation
This workshop teaches individuals how to lead
or convene deliberative forums in their communities
and/or organizations. During
the course, participants:
• Identify
the characteristics of the various forms of public discourse deliberation.
• Differentiate
deliberation from other forms of public discourse such as debate,
consensus and compromise.
• Explore
the role of deliberation in democracy and public policy.
• Gain insight about citizenship “awareness” – or
the idea that each citizen has political abilities and responsibilities.
• Explore
the transitions from public opinion and public judgment to public
common ground.
• Identify
the skill sets needed to convene, lead and record deliberative forums.
• Receive
an opportunity to actively engage in deliberative forums.
•
Learn methods for promoting networking with others who are engaged in
National Issues Forums.
