Education
My educational background includes both a B.A. in Marketing from
Michigan State University and an MBA in Marketing from Michigan State as
well. I truly love what I refer to as the "soft side" of business,
primarily marketing, advertising and sales. As you can imagine, I am a
big Spartan fan as well.
Professional Background
My professional background includes over 10 years experience with
Fortune 500 companies in a variety of marketing roles. My first job out
of college was as a sales representative for General Foods (now part of
the Kraft empire).
Following my career at GF, I got my MBA and moved onto the automotive
industry and the marketing field. At the Cadillac division of General Motors, I was able to gain
valuable experience as a marketing research analyst, a marketing
strategy analyst, and later a cross brand marketing manager. From
Cadillac, I went to Saturn where I fell in love with advertising and managed
their 1994 print campaign (that was when the advertising was still
cutting edge, unlike the current stuff). I also had the opportunity to
participate in the planning of the Saturn Homecoming, an amazing
marketing effort where thousands of Saturn owners actually drove from
all over the country to see the plant where their car was "born." Go
figure.
To round out my advertising experience, I took a position as New Business
Director for Harris Marketing Group, a women's marketing advertising
agency. About a year into my time with Harris, my husband and I were
blessed with boy/girl twins. With this new chapter in my life, I sought
a part time job which would allow me the chance to keep my intellectual
skills fresh while allowing me maximum time at home with my children.
I was offered a part time teaching position at College of DuPage and
literally jumped at the chance. As a result, I have been teaching since
1999 and absolutely love every minute of it.
Teaching Style
I believe the best learning environment for students is one in which
they apply textbook concepts to real life situations. My favorite
classes as both an undergraduate and graduate student were those with
truly innovative teaching environments and instructors with real world
experience.
As a result, my classes involve assignments and exercises that
require the students to stretch their thinking instead of regurgitating
textbook facts and figures. Additionally, this type of teaching
methodology will hopefully give students insight into what it really
means to work in advertising, marketing or business and thus to narrow
down their potential career choices as well.
Lastly, I believe that good writing skills are essential to success
in the business world. As a result I expect pinpoint accuracy in all
submitted assignments. Think of me as the CEO and yourself as anything
you want (Vice President, Director, General Manager). When you submit
work to me, make sure it is of the quality that you would provide to a
CEO.
