About our committee

The Latin American Studies Committee at College of DuPage welcomes you.  This website will continually be under construction; as we host more events we will add information and photographs.  The committee hosts several trips to Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood each year, including visits to the Mexican Fine Arts Museum.  We also prepare an ofrenda for Día de los Muertos, and offer several other activities throughout the school year.  For example, in 2002 we hosted a lecture by Doris Ayala, Executive Director of Latino Family Institute.  In 2003, we hosted two lectures by Dennis Grammenos, Assistant Professor of Geography & Environmental Studies at Northeastern Illinois University.

The committee's objectives are to promote understanding and appreciation of Latin American countries and cultures at College of DuPage through forming ties with other college committees and organizations and providing cultural and educational opportunities for students and the college community.

The Day of the Dead Ofrenda

The committee regularly constructs a Day of the Dead altar. In 2001, the Ofrenda was dedicated to the victims of 9/11. In 2002, we constructed a series of smaller altars, dedicated to Sor Juana, the victims of the Pinochet dictatorship, and others. After a year's break, we assembled an altar dedicated to the murdered women of Ciudad Juarez. View a PowerPoint presentation of the 2001 display.

Dennis Grammenos on Colombia Grammenos, Assistant Professor of Geography at Northeastern Illinois University and a longtime human rights activist, came to COD in early 2003 to discuss the so-called War on Drugs. Visit Dennis' NEIU homepage.
