Degree Requirements

If your degree will include both quarter and semester credit, be sure to check the special CONVERSION section.

A minimum of 68 semester hours (102 quarter-hours) is required for the AES degree. In addition to the required courses, you should plan to take the recommendations listed for each curriculum at the bottom of the checklist provided. Check with your transfer school for any additional requirements, such as additional chemistry, math, or physics. Any additional hours you may need to reach the required 68 semester hours (102 quarter-hours) can be chosen from other appropriate electives. See an engineering advisor for more information.

When planning your program, be sure to consider the math, science, and engineering sequences.

Electives Guidelines

The best source for information to help you choose engineering and SS/Humanities electives are the college catalogs and/or the brochures available from many schools. If you are undecided about curriculum or college, use the following as a guide.

Engineering Electives

Required engineering courses vary by discipline (mechanical, electrical, etc.) and somewhat by transfer school. If you have not decided on a transfer school, use the suggestions included with the checklist for the AES degree.

Social Science / Humanities Electives

Approximately six SS/Humanities courses are required for the baccalaureate degree. It is recommended that two or three be taken while at COD. All engineering programs have requirements for sequences in Social Sciences and Humanities; many have requirements for a particular course; and some have requirements for Junior/Senior Social Science and/or Humanities.

Foreign Language

A foreign lanquage is required only at UIUC. At this point no other programs require a foreign language. The requirement at UIUC is for three years of a single foreign language in high school or the equivalent in college. Note that college credit may not be applied towards degree requirements at UIUC or COD.

CIS Elective

All engineering programs require at least one course in a high-level programing language. If you have not chosen a curriculum or college, then FORTRAN is the best choice. Some schools now require C++ of all students. Many EE programs may require C++ in addition to or instead of FORTRAN.
