Engineering Newsletter

March-April 2007

This is the first monthly= (or perhaps bi-monthly) e-mail for engineering students at COD. It will usually contain informatio= n on scholarships, internships, college visits, advising and other information j= ust for you. Eventually, we hope = to start an engineering club so this newsletter will also update you on any meetings, field trips, or activities that the club hosts. If you would ever like to post som= ething to the newsletter including jobs or scholarships you’ve heard about, = or text books you would like to pass down and/or sell, or just to give a shout= -out to someone you know, e-mail me and I will include it.

ENGINEERING CLUB=

Anyone interested in help= ing form an engineering club should come to a short meeting held next Tuesday, April 3, at 1:00pm in Roo= m IC 1017. I would just li= ke to discuss how to start a club here at COD and what you would like that club to focus on (field trips, bringing speakers in, college visits, etc.). This will largely be a club run by= you, the students, and for your benefit as engineering students, so you can make= it whatever you want it to be.

SCHOLARSHIPS:<= /b>

There are thousands of scholarships out there waiting for you to find them. Here are some that pertain strictl= y to the College of DuPage. But, I encourage each of you to search online for other scholarships for engineeri= ng students. You may also want to contact our Financial Aid office to see if you qualify for any need based scholarships as well.

Naperville Rotary Scholarship:&n= bsp; Due May 11, 2007

The Rotary Club of Naperv= ille will grant up to $25,000 toward two years tuition and educational expense= to a student transferring from the College of DuPage and atten= ding Benedictine University or North Central College leading to a Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor in Business Administration or Bachelor of Science degree.

CRITERION FOR SELECTION: = ; Financial need, academic performance, and service to school and community.

Contact me or see the att= ached document for the application. Note that they would like you to type all necessary information, so it might be useful to save the document in your own Word file and fill it out on the computer.

Blaudow/ATS Technic= al Leadership Program in Manufacturing:

The College of Engineerin= g at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale has partnered with Advanced Technology Services to offer a scholarship towards tuition and fees ($8,000 during the first 2 semest= ers and $6,000 for remaining semesters). This also include= s a 6-month paid-internship position, including a leadership training course, w= ith industrial partners between the first and second year.

CRITERION FOR SELECTION:<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> Community-college transfer students having U.S. citizenship and who have completed at least 48 hours applicable= to a degree from the SIUC College of Engineering. Participants will be selected base= d on demonstrated leadership accomplishments in the high-school or community-col= lege setting, academic performance, military or entrepreneurship experience, and financial need.

Please contact me for an application. This is a contin= uing program, so it will be offered every year.= The application should be sent in around the time you apply for acceptance into SIUC.

COD Natural and Applied Sciences Scholarships

The application, requirements, and benefits for each o= f the following are available through the Financial Aid Office, SRC 2050 and the Financial Aid webpage http://www.= cod.edu/fin%5Faid/ . Applications due by Friday April 6.

2 scholarships, $500 each

1 scholarship for tuition/fees/books)

1 scholarship for $1000 tuition & fees

1 scholarship for $2000 Annual Award for tuition/fees/books

INTERNSHIPS:

Internships are an extrem= ely important part of becoming an engineer.&nb= sp; It’s hard to land that first job without having stepped foot i= n an engineering office before. Mo= st internships consist of drafting in a computer program like AutoCAD or solid modeling in ProE. So if you’ve taken Engineering 1101, you’re certainly qualified to ap= ply for these types of internships. You will most likely not get to do design as an intern, but you will get to work with design engineers so that you can see what they do on a daily basis. It’s a great way to know if you’re going into the right field of engineering.

Summer is the perfect time to get experience and take = time off from classes. This way yo= u can earn some money and then just focus on your course work throughout the scho= ol year. Several paid-internship opportunities are available for engineering students through the Cooperative Education/Internship Program in the Career Services Center (SRC 1490) Phone: 630-942-2611. Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, Engineering:

A local village is seekin= g a second or third year engineering student intern to assist the Village Engin= eer and the Engineering staff during the summer 2007 break. Interested student should be enrolled in a civil engineering curriculum and should have some drafting and surveying experience. This position will provide the successfu= l applicant with an excellent opportunity to observe and participate in various civil engineering projects.

Summer position (May - August). This is a full-ti= me position, 40 hours/week. Business hours are Monday - Friday 8:00 am - = 5:00 pm.

Student intern with Drafting and Survey Engineeri= ng experience is a plus.

$11.50/h= r

Computer-Aided Drafting and Design, Engineering, Eng. Tech:

Candidate will work in the drafting area on different projects within Product Design with other Product Designers. This is a full-time position. Business hours are 7:30am-4:15pm.<= /p>

Qualification (Required): Candidate must be a full-time Jr. College student with a minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 / 4.0 (‘B’ average); Completed at least 1 year of a 2 year Jr. C= ollege program; Completion of a drafting detailing class and CAD related clas= s; Enrolled in ‘Associates in Science’ related class; Satisfactory completion of classes related to on-the-job assignment; O= ral and written communications skills; Some analytical ability where probl= ems are not difficult or complex.

Preferred: Drafting experience; 3D CAD experience (Unigraphics); Experience using PC’s or other computer systems.<= /li>
$2,460 - $2,700/month

Packer Engineering Internship

This is an excellent paid-internship opportunity for any engineering student. Packer Engineering hosts a program funded by the National Science Foundation for high school and community col= lege students during the summer. T= here is an informational meeting that is highly recommended on Tuesday, April 3 if you are interested in applying. The meeting will be held at 7:00pm= at Packer Engineering, 1950 N. Washington St., Naperville, on the third floor. Only two or three stud= ents can be chosen from each school. Attend the meeting to receive an application.&nbs= p; This internship is not offered through the Career Services Center, s= o if you have questions, contact me.

ADVISING

Do you know what you̵= 7;re taking in the fall? Perhaps y= ou should stop by my office. Als= o, it’s a great idea to take a Math class in the summer so prerequisites don’t hold you up.
