$$$ = INTERNSHIPS $$$

Internships are an extrem= ely important part of becoming an engineer.&nb= sp; It’s hard to land that first job without having stepped foot i= n an engineering office before. Mo= st internships consist of drafting in a computer program like AutoCAD or solid modeling in ProE. So if you&#= 8217;ve taken Engineering 1101, you’re certainly qualified to apply for these types of internships. You wil= l most likely not get to do design as an intern, but you will get to work with des= ign engineers so that you can see what they do on a daily basis. It’s a great way to know if you’re going into the right field of engineering.

Several paid-internship opportunities are available for engineering students through the Cooperative Education/Internship Program in the Career Services Center (SRC 1490).

Did you know?= ??? C.O.D. is one of the only sc= hools that has an internship program that allows you to get paid AND receive coll= ege credit??? It’s a fantas= tic deal and you won’t find it anywhere else. You can apply for 1 to 4 hours of = credit a semester as long as your job pertains to engineering. I would be your advisor and togeth= er we would work out a plan that demonstrates to me that your job is truly engineering related and that you are learning from it. If you are interested in this opportunity, you must first contact the Career Services Center (SRC 1490), 630-942-2611, and go to a short seminar.

Packer Engineering = Summer Internship Program

This is one of the best internship opportunities around. Packer Engineering is a very diverse= firm varying from civil/mechanical to micro/nano technology. They hire a class of interns every summer to participate in a paid six week program. This year the program starts on Ju= ne 23. Work hours are 8am –= ; 5pm. You will spend about half the time working with an engineer on projects and the other half working on group pr= ojects with your “classmates”. If you’re interested, I suggest you attend their information meeting on Thursday, April 10 at 7pm.

Job Description: We are seeking a Code Enforcement Intern for summer employment from approximately May through August 2008. This is a full-time position. Duties include both office and field work (in all weather conditions). Typical work hours are from 7:00 = a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (We can be somewhat flexible on start times.) This position = will report to a Code Enforcement Officer and will be responsible for research, program administration, billing, independent letter writing and independe= nt inspections. Some specific duties will include weed violation enforcement, including verification of violations, notification of residents, file maintenance and follow-up inspections. Additional duties will involve conducting fence permit inspections to ensure fences are in compliance wi= th clearance requirements and approved placement; and sign ordinance inspect= ions and other miscellaneous code enforcement responsibilities. Candidates mus= t be currently enrolled in a college-accredited curriculum, with a major in criminal justice, planning, building or an engineering field preferred. T= hey must have strong oral and written communication skills; and experience wi= th Word and Excel. Candidates must be energetic and self-motivated as well. = This is an excellent opportunity to learn and work for a very progressive organization. All candidates must be at least 18 years of age to apply fo= r a position with the City. A valid State of Illinois Class D Driver's License is required. If you are contacted for an interview, you will be required to provide, at the interview, a copy of a Driver's License Abstract demonstr= ating a driving history with no violations for at least the last twelve (12) months. Don’t ignore this!!= ! So many people say “Oh, there’s no chance I’ll get it” and they don’t apply. Do you know how many scholarships go UNAWARDED every year because NO ONE ends up applying!?!?!?!?!?!?!! If any= one is qualified for these scholarships, it is an engineering student. An engineering degree is seen as arguably the most difficult undergraduate degree to attain – scholars= hip committees know how hard you work!! Now go get some money for it!

The difficult part is FIN= DING the scholarships, not GETTING the scholarships. You’ll have to do a lot of searching on your own. But he= re are some that were sent to me recently.

NANOTECHNOLOGY PR= OGRAM

College of DuPage will be starting a Nanotechnology program in the near future. Nanotechnology is an exploding fie= ld that shows no signs of stopping anytime soon. Because not many people know what nanotechnology is, there is a program hosted by UIC, COD, and Truman College to inform students about the possibilities in the field of nanotechnology.<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> This program was initiated for wom= en, but men are welcome to join as well.
