Professional Background


Education:

Ph.D. English, Northern Illinois University, Dissertation Title: Form and Ideology: Factory Novels by Women in Late 19th Century America

M.A. English, University of Florida

B.A. English, University of Florida

 

Teaching Experience:

1997-present   Professor of English, College of DuPage (COD).

Taught English 102 and 103. In addition to composition, I have taught Introduction to Technical Writing (English 105) and Technical Writing (English 110).

1994-2003   Writing Assistance Area Coordinator,  (COD).

Responsible for developing and coordinating the college’s first writing center. Duties include hiring, scheduling, and evaluating staff as well as developing policies and procedures. In Fall 2000, the Writing Center became part of the Academic Support Center.

1992 -1997   Associate Professor of English, (COD).

Taught English 101, 102, and 103. In addition to composition, I have taught Introduction to Technical Writing (English 105) and Introduction to Literature (English 130).

1987-1988   Lecturer, Dept. of English,  Northern Illinois  Univ. , (NIU)

Taught two classes of Masterpieces of American Literature (ENGL 116). This course was designed to offer through close inspection, a deeper understanding and appreciation of major American literary works in relation to their literary and historical context. An important objective of the course was to develop critical thinking and its expression in writing and discussion.

1986-1987   Assistant Professor of English, NIU.

Taught six classes of The Experience of Fiction (ENGL 110). This course introduced students to the basic concepts and critical reading techniques fundamental to the understanding and appreciation of several forms of fiction. Students were required to share their ideas through writing.

1981-1986  Writing Clinic, Director (1984-1986) ; Tutor, NIU.

The clinic provided help for specific problems in a tutorial setting. While proofreading and editorial services were not provided, students were helped in all stages of the writing process.

As Director I developed exercises and assignments for students planning to take exams such as the Junior Qualifying Exam and the Education Basic Skills Exam that required essay writing.

1978 (fall)   Assistant Professor of English, Univ. of Florida. 

Taught several sections of Expository Writing (ENGL 110). This class required weekly writing assignments where students used a variety of rhetorical strategies such as cause and effect, comparison/contrast, definition, etc.
