Step 3: Create the Slide Show

Photoshop 7 and CS ( 8 ) include an automatic Webpage slide show creation feature. This lets you create a miniature Website that displays a series of images, without having to know how to create HTML code. You will be using this feature to create a slide show of all your projects, as the conclusion of your work during the quarter.

  1. Your first step is to ensure that all the correct files are in the proper folder and have been renamed to correspond to the actual project. In Windows Explorer, verify that the needed files are in the right place.

Your files should be under My Documents, in the folder that bears your last name. Make sure that the only files there, are the projects you did for class, including your final projects. Also feel free to include any other work you did while in class that you feel is exceptional, or that I have commented positively about.

Following previous instructions, also make sure that the files have been re-named to correspond to the appropriate project. For example, the vignette project will be called "yourname_vignette".

  2. Now make sure that you've created another folder under My Documents that you've called "yourname_266". This is the destination folder for the slide show. If all these points are in order, you're ready to begin.

  3. In Photoshop, go to the File Menu, then to Automate. From the Automate sub-menu, choose Web Photo Gallery. A large dialog box appears, from which you'll need to make a number of choices:

    1. Under "Folders", you have two choices to make - one for source and one for destination. Click the button called "Browse", and choose your current folder.

    2. IMPORTANT ! Make sure that you un-check the box, "Include All Subfolders". Having this checked, especially if the subfolders include many large Photoshop files, can create errors when generating the slide show.

    3. Now click the button called "Destination" and choose the folder yourname_266.

    4. Under "Options", you have several choices to make. Under "Banner", click the field for site name, and enter your full name.

    5. Go back to "Options", and choose "Large Images". Under "Large Images", check "Resize Images". Enter 450 for Resize, and no larger. Under "JPEG Quality", check "High". Don't change any of the other options.

    6. Go back to "Options", and choose "Thumbnails". Under "Size", choose "Small". Leave all other settings intact.

    7. Finally, go back to the top of the Web Photo Gallery window. Under "Site", choose "Styles".
Different versions of Photoshop have slightly different choices for this section.
      • If you use Photoshop CS ( a.k.a. "8" ): Under Styles, choose the first option, "Centered Frame 1 - Basic"
      • If you use Photoshop 7: The best result is gotten from the last two choices, "Vertical Slide Show 1" and "Vertical Slide Show 2". Choose one of these.
In both cases, the small preview window underneath the "Cancel" button shows what it will look like.

    8. Now click OK, and you'll see all your images flash across the screen as Photoshop processes the data. When it's done, your system's Web browser will automatically open to show the gallery you've just created.

You now have a fully functional art gallery slide show, viewable on any Web browser. Besides using it for class, you can burn this to a CD to give to a prospective employer or client, or upload the entire folder to a server on the Web.

Proceed to the next step - burning the CD.
