  3. Go to the Windows Start Menu, click on Programs, then choose Accessories and then click on NotePad.

  4. In NotePad, go to the Edit Menu and choose Paste.

  5. The text from the statement file will be pasted into your new NotePad document.

  6. Move your cursor to the top of your file, to the beginning of the pasted text, and hit the spacebar several times.

  7. In the newly-created space at the top of the page, type your full name, and then type "Artist Statement".

  8. Hit the spacebar again to give yourself some space and begin typing your own artist statement, following the considerations and guidelines found in the pasted text. Feel free to use anything you wrote in the final project proposal form, earlier in the quarter.

  9. When finished, save this file as " yourname_statement.txt " where yourname = your last name. Save it to your slide show folder.

Questions / Considerations for Artist Statement

From the statement file, here are the types of questions you should consider for the finished statement:

  1. why the final image appears the way it does and / or why certain elements were chosen,
  2. what kind of mood you are trying to establish,
  3. what you hope to convey through the piece,
  4. and what kind of reaction you anticipate from the viewer

After writing your statement, you can delete all of the other text that I wrote - the questions, etc.

Things to consider for your artist statement:

Intent of the project - what does it mean ? What do you hope to convey ? What is your message ? Why are you doing it in this particular way ? Are there other ways, that might be more effective ? Does the finished piece satisfy the original intentions ?

Theme and feeling - what is the subject matter of your piece ? How do you feel about the subject matter ? What kind of mood, or atmosphere are you trying to create ? What kind of emotional, intellectual, or other response do you want to evoke in the viewer ? Are there incongruities between your stated objectives and your finished piece, and why - are these intentional ?

The journey - as your work progressed from inception to completion, note the following : how does the work in progress, change from your original vision ? Did you make any discoveries on the way that altered the image's outcome ? What was the discovery ? Did the creation of the work give you new ideas for future projects ?

If you're stumped by all of this, try refreshing your memory by looking at your responses ( and my responses to them ) on the final project proposal form, which was returned to you during the third week of the quarter.
( Of course, you still have it, right ? )   :- \

You're now ready to create the slide show. Proceed to the next step.
